8 Ways the Government of Ontario Is Helping Immigrants in the Province

The government of Canada has some programs and monies in place to help people who have immigrated to Canada. This information can be useful for those who have already immigrated to Canada as well as the people who are thinking of immigrating to Canada as they will know what to expect.

1. The federal government has agreed to issue an extra $920 million for five years in order to give additional training in English or French to those who have immigrated to Canada. In addition, the government of Ontario has $60 million invested in teaching English and French as a second language to immigrants.
2. Bill 124 which created the Office of the Fairness Commissioner and the Global Experience Ontario; they are responsible to help immigrants find work in their field of study or the area in which they have prior experience.
3. The bridge training program will help immigrants go from their job in their country into this new job in Canada. They are there to make this transition period easier for immigrants by assisting them with certification or registration necessary to work in their field.
4. People immigrating to Ontario and who have worked in their field for more than three years may qualify for the internship programs. This program allows immigrants to do a six month internship in order to gain experience in their field in the province.
5. In total, there are 81 community agencies in Ontario which are there to help immigrants settle better in Canada with various programs and help offered.
6. The government also invests money in the Ontario’s Community Builders which is a grant that promotes Ontario’s ethnic and cultural diversity. This is done through education of the general population as well as by providing assistance to organizations helping immigrants in Ontario.
7. $2.1 million is also invested in the Ministry’s Language Interpreter Services so that those who do not speak English and are victims of domestic violence will get the service in the language they are most comfortable in. Although these people may know English, as this is a sensitive matter, it may be easier for them to express this in their native language.
8. There is also a service called Employment Ontario which helps people gain employment while also helping those looking for workers to find the ones with the right experience. The program offers information on job searching, employment planning and preparation and job placement.
